We offer holiday cottages and apartements at the southern part of the Sierra Nevada massif. The rentals in the higher Alpujarras are perfect startng points for walking and hiking in the Alpujarras. For skiing you need to access the Sierra Nevada from the North (Granada city).   

The area was declared a National Park in January 1999. Within its 86,208 hectares, live a wide variety of unique plant species and increasingly rare wild animals. Mountain goats and many kinds of birds of prey, from eagles to eagle owls, can be seen.

 

The most important walking areas are the Poqueira gorch, La Taha de Pitres and Trevelz, the highest village of Andalucia. As Trevelz has lost his ancient character we do not offer accomodation in this village, nevertheless it is the nearest village to the Sierra Nevada peaks.   

 

The rural district known as La Taha (a Moorish word for an administrative area) comprises seven attractive whitewashed villages spread across the sunny southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, in the very heart of the western Alpujarras or 'Alpujarra Granaíno'. Around each nucleus of population stretch terraced fields and vegetable gardens where different kinds of fruit and trees grow according to the altitude, offering the visitor a lovely area in which to roam.

 

Above the main village of Pitres the landscape is dominated by oaks and sweet chestnuts, cherry and walnut trees. In the valley below, a Mediterranean climate permits the cultivation of figs, almonds and olives in traditional groves.The smallest and highest (1400 m) of the seven villages is Capilerilla, almost untouched by the passage of time. From here the magnificent view of the mountains takes in even the distant peaks of northern Morocco.
The other villages are scattered across the steep hillside between Pitres and the Rio Trevelez valley. Nearest to the dramatic river canyon are Ferreirola, famous for its fizzy mineral water spring and Fondales. Along with Atalbeitar, Mecina and Mecinilla, situated a little higher up the hill, these villages enjoy a mild climate and are wonderfully peaceful.

 

The flat-roofed houses, narrow streets and covered passages (tinaos) show the lasting architectural influence of the Moors, who found their last refuge in Europe here after the fall of Granada.

The River Poqueira lies in the valley of the Poqueira - an all year round mountain stream slashing deep into the heady heights of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at a height of 3200 m above sea level.
It is a part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and is renowned for its incomparable and diverse landscape.
For most of the year the summits of the Sierra Nevada are snow-capped and dominate impressively the panoramic landscape of the Poqueira valley below. The views are spectacular and far-reaching - on clear days, even to the Rif Mountains of Morocco.

 

Much of the landscape around seems barren but on closer inspection there is a plethora of wild flora and fauna and the slopes are dotted with stone farmhouses and small whitewashed villages. The three most attractive of these are Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, well known in Spain for their unique beauty.

 

Pampaneira, 900 m above sea level, is a lovely place to wander around with its winding lanes and Berber style architecture. There are plenty of shops selling local produce such as cheese and mountain ham (jamon), as well as arts and crafts such as paintings, tapestries and ceramics.

Bubion, 1200 m above sea level, is an ideal starting point for treks into the Poqueira Gorge and also has some friendly bars and restaurants where visitors can relax, eat and enjoy the views over the valley. To the western side of the gorge there is a Tibetan Monastery - "Osel Ling" (Place of Clear Light) - founded in 1982 and where, a few years later a local Spanish boy was acknowledged to be the reincarnation of a Tibetan Lama.

Capileira at 1450 metres above sea level, is the highest of the three villages and the portal to treks up to the Sierra Nevadas' highest peaks, Veleta and Mulhacen. There is a bus that runs in the summer, taking visitors up into the Natural Park where other vehicles are prohibited.

 

There are two swimming pools in the area, one in the campsite at Capileira and another in the Pitres campsite (summer only). The coastal resorts are approximately 75 minutes drive away.
