Area in the Malaga Province

The Axarquía - Costa del Sol

La Axarquía, countryside East of Malaga and inland of Costa del Sol, is a spectacular and beautiful area of Andalucia which claims to have the best climate in Europe. It is less than 1 hours drive from Malaga and the airport.

The area of the Axarquía - Inland of Costa del Sol consists of mountains, valleys and coast. The mountains are covered with lemon and orange trees, olives, almonds, vines, and whitewashed houses dotted about. The sierras look out over the Mudejar and the coastal towns separated by beaches, cliffs and coves.
The Velez, Algarrobo and Torrox rivers all run through the region.
Inland the "white villages" are unspoilt and full of charm, with narrow winding streets and ancient houses built in the Moorish style.

La Axarquía has its own micro-climate which, being surrounded by hills, creates a sub tropical feel influenced by the proximity of the sea. The predominant characteristics of the climate are hot, dry summers, mild winters with variable rainfall, almost constant sunshine and an absence of frost. The short spring and lengthy autumn are transitional seasons which tend to merge imperceptibly into one another with no winter season.

There are plenty of opportunities for walking both inland, in the hills and mountains, and along the coast. The beaches are clean, mostly sand or mixed pebbles and sand. The area has many places of interest and activities for all ages such as boat trips, carting, caves, parks and gardens, museums, water parks, jeep safaris, paint ball, quads, casinos, to name but a few. There are many restaurants and bars with many styles of cuisine. The local speciality is fish on the coast and traditional Spanish cooking inland. You can also find Indian, Chinese and English cuisine.

All through the summer there are fiestas in the towns and, on occasions, the nightlife goes on until sunrise. Easter is an important time for celebration with processions in many towns competing with each other for splendor. Carrying the local deities is an honor that the locals line up for. All the fiestas are accompanied by loud fireworks and colorful displays as a spectacular finale.
All in all, la Axarquía is a wonderful place for a holiday and a diverse and beautiful region, suitable for everybody.
