Salobreña is a town that remains typical of old Andalusia

It is conveniently situated 100 km east of Malaga and 50 km south of Granada, with views inland of the snow-covered summits of the Sierra Nevada

Up the steps to the castle

Salobreña Old Town clusters around a hill that is visible from miles away and is crowned by the towers of a Moorish castle, which today keeps a well-tended, shady garden inside its walls. The view over the fertile river plain up to the peaks of the Sierra makes the steep climb through the narrow lanes well worth the effort. A little way inland, the last working sugarcane processing factory in Europe lies in the midst of far sugar piping plan days.

Thanks to the protection given by the nearby Sierra Nevada, the winters are as mild as in the western part of the Costa del Sol (Malaga/Marbella). This is also evident from the vegetation of the area: chirimoyas, mangos, bananas and sugarcane prosper here, watered by the snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada. The area still lives mainly from agriculture - tourism comes only second.

For golfers, Salobreña has a 9-hole course known as "Los Moriscos" at Playa Granada. This part of the town is built right on the seafront, with palm-lined streets leading to the two long sand and shingle beaches, on which stand a number of good beach restaurants
